It’s just after 11 pm e.s.t. here in Canada, and the networks just announced that Barack Obama has been declared the next president of the US.
I don’t typically “do” politics on this Blog, but I want to say a word or two. Many of you know my history. I was born in Buffalo, NY, and spent the 60s marching for and working for Civil Rights.
My first political activity was working for Bobby Kennedy. I went off to Chicago in 68 for my BA, and spent my years there marching and protesting and writing. by the mid-70s, I’d had enough, and came to Canada. I’ve been in Canada longer than I lived in the States, and I love it here.
Nonetheless, I still have a warm spot (and relatives!) in the states, and I’ve watched this election with hope and worry.

I don’t think many north of the border could avoid flinching over the Bush years. Enough said.
I never thought I’d live to see this night, and all I want to say is I am grateful that I have. In a sense, (as McCain is saying in the background) a huge section of the population that has been marginalized has finally see what Martin Luther King prayed for and what he and Bobby died for.
I don’t use the “G” word very often, but let me just say… God Has Blessed America.
