Introduction

In order to understand why we're making such a "big thing" out of Breathwork and Bodywork, and to understand why we're putting so much effort into teaching you to examine and understand and "repair" the human body (yours and others!), we have to spend a bit of time looking at how our bodies got to be the tight little balls of stress that they are.

Bodywork

We begin our Bodywork exploration by considering our bodies.

In this process, we'll look at expanding our boundaries and taking down the walls that keep us apart. We'll

Breathwork

We're now going to establish a pattern for breathing. In homage to Haven, where this is a major item in the curriculum, we often call what you are about to learn, "Haven breathing." Working with a partner is best, as your partner can watch you breathe and make sure you're taking a full breath.

Emotions

Emotions have received a bad rap. Or, at least emotions judged to be "bad or difficult" have.

You'll no doubt have noticed that Bodywork and Breathwork, by increasing chi, or energy, seem to bring up, or shake up, our feelings, our emotions. Feelings seem more powerful, more edgy.

This is so because of the rebalancing of energy that takes place in Bodywork. As the muscles relax and as the flow of energy strengthens, past hurts and traumas release.

Freeing the Body

All of us experience odd feelings of "not normal" when dealing with our bodies. Because of our obsession with "the dictates of fashion," women especially judge themselves against impossibly high standards - "standards" that are airbrushed or digitally manipulated to begin with.

Sexual Embarrassment is a subset of Bodily Embarrassment, and is a huge issue - as far as sexuality goes, both men and women are all over the "bodily comfort" map.

Exercises

OK, so we've looked at the zones of the body and Breathwork. The Breathwork is meant to get the chi flowing, from head to foot, in waves of intense feeling. The goal is to have you find a source of energy that you can draw upon at all times, through breath and focus. You'll find that, with practice, much energy is available to you, all day long, and this will feel, initially, a bit odd (sort of like walking around vibrating).

Let's then, shift to actually working on the body.
