I proposed that fear comes in two flavours: 1) fear of the OTHER, and fear of the SELF. Let me note that both capitalized words differ from their “small” counterparts.
Especially in the West, vulnerability is considered a weakness. This is taught to us by our parents and tribes, who are, of course, concerned for our safety. However, this fear of vulnerability is ingrained at a deep level, to our detriment, once we become adults. (This is one reason most adults aren’t!)
True compassion happens infrequently in our world, because of the downward pull toward security and safety — things valued by our tribes and cultures.
We are taught from birth to only notice certain things. This is the process of socialization.
